About the event
Join us for the Forest Stewardship Summer Series! This series of educational events will focus on private forest stewardship and conservation. We aim to facilitate communication among forest owners, practitioners, and educators, to strengthen an ethic of forest stewardship in the region. Registration is free, but slots are limited. Donations to the sponsoring organizations are welcomed and encouraged.
Northern red oak is an important tree species in our region, for both timber and wildlife. However, regenerating red oak can be challenging especially when American beech is present.
Join licensed forester Peter Renzelman and UNH Extension County Forester Matt Kelly for a tour of a private woodlot that was thinned eight years ago and where beech control methods were used. Peter and Matt will lead a discussion about red oak and beech ecology, management approaches to promote red oak regeneration, and techniques to help prevent beech from dominating future stands. We will also discuss beech leaf disease, its impacts, and how it may change our thinking on managing beech going forward.
